But the rotary is so compact! Oh wait, that LS1 fits perfectly....

I have been waiting to see this somewhere. The RX-8s are actually cheaper than the FD RX-7s in many cases and they are much newer and seat 4. This swap makes perfect sense.

Not an RX-8 but..

Turbo 5.3 with hand ported 317 heads, LS9 cam and turbo. Probably drives great.

His signature says it runs 8.9s @ 153. He also has an RX-7 with a 3.8 turbo in it. This guy is awesome.

He also has this opinion about the use of a 3.8 turbo today (technically a year ago):
I’ll miss the 3.8’s, but my GN days are over. I just sold by black GN powered RX-7 (FC) last month. Parts are expensive and hard to find. Not to mention 1980’s technology, flat tappet cams, crappy flowing heads etc… The new LS motors are decades ahead of the old buick motors and can be picked up for 200-500 complete at most junk yards. Not to mention cheap used parts and current aftermarket performance parts.
Ed would say the 3.8 turbo is interesting but really if you are comparing a 3.8 turbo to some kind of LS turbo build, there is absolutely no reason to run the 3.8 turbo unless you just have an 80s technology fetish. It's not even lighter.

EDIT: Actually it may be a tad lighter.

So for a 79 RX-7 that traps 150mph, he had this to say:
Need a whole slew of safety equipment before I try to push it any faster. This still only has a roll bar in it. Needs a full cage, chute, and a few other goodies. Hell I'm on the 1979 OEM brake calipers. Trying to slow this thing down is a little scary.

Plan to put a junkyard 6.0 and a new cam in this winter. Should make quite a bit more power.
1979 OEM calipers. He must have trouble walking.

Timing chain failure. Now that sucks. 4.8 in his future. Also check out the minivan.

Interesting bit about the crankshaft being machined wrong for the DoD stuff.
