Up to 723 lb weight savings, eh? Well, they tested their King Ranch 4WD w/ ecoboost V6 and it weighed 5,580 lbs. Which isn't light. However, a 2013 F-150 Limited w/ ecoboost V6 weighed 6,029 lbs. However, the 2013 truck had the standard 5-1/2 foot bed (1 foot shorter than the 2015), so with a longer bed (and frame), the 2015 truck was still 449 lbs lighter. But, really, the news is how HEAVY the old trucks were. I think Ford was actually at the back of the pack if you rate in terms of strength-to-weight. They were heavy and simultaneously not known for being the most structurally sound.

So a 2014 Silverado is 5,672.

You can see why Ford switched to aluminum: they had to. GM's trucks seem nearly as light without it.

It’s a similar story with the 3.5-liter EcoBoost V-6, a carry-over from last year that stands above the V-8 in price and performance. When we hitched 9000 pounds of cargo trailer to the 385-hp 5.0-liter V-8, we missed the 33 additional pound-feet of turbocharged torque from the EcoBoost engine. Not to mention, the boosted V-6 engines emit a convincing eight-cylinder growl that’s tracked into the cabin via software that monitors the engine rpm and the torque demand. What Ford calls “sound enhancement” is quietly included in upper trim levels to amplify the otherwise-quiet 2.7-liter and 3.5-liter EcoBoost engines.

This is a problem. I suppose this is a segment that typically sells far below MSRP. I don't really see the point in inflated MSRPs.

We drove a low-spec four-door XLT model with the 2.7-liter EcoBoost V-6, cloth seats, rear-wheel drive, and relatively few creature comforts that carried a sticker price of $42,875. That’s a problem that doesn’t plague just Ford, but the entire full-size-truck segment

No, that would only help if there were inflated actual transaction prices.

Maybe it makes people feel like they got a deal, so they can brag to their friends?
