Quora: How to win chases against police cars

This is quite a story.

Stepping out on a limb.

I used to do this because I was an idiot, and I never do it now, because my idiocy is now focused on words, and not deeds. Please forgive me.

2002 Mustang Cobra

All chases took place at night, on the interstate, and at speeds in excess of 125 MPH, most police cars in Indiana are limited to a 125 MPH top speed.

22 getaways, 1 reckless driving ticket (144 MPH in a 55 MPH Zone, beaten in court)

The idea was to drive any speed I wanted to drive, and if caught, have a police officer try to catch me. I would get off the Interstate before he saw where I got off the interstate at, or do a U-Turn in the median (dangerous if you don't know what you are doing) and go the other way at a normal rate of speed.

The reason for night time is they may not be able to get your plate number if you pass them going fast enough. They will not see your face, or the color of your clothes (tinted windows work better at night). They are short staffed, and can't get enough support cars involved before you disappear. You better disappear fast, every second counts.

I equipped my car with an electric by-pass muffler system which allowed me to make the car very loud, or factory quiet, giving me plausible deniability. It wasn't me officer!

The headlights were switched independently so I could turn one or the other off and appear to be a different car upon closer inspection.

The taillights were switched independently, and could both be turned off without the headlights being effected. This would effectively disappear my car to a chase vehicle that was far enough away.

I also used a 2002 Crown Victoria Police Interceptor during that time, but never got chased or harassed no matter how fast I was going. It was speed limited to 125 MPH. The car was outfitted with interior strobes and exterior antenna and the elaborate switching for the lights, just to be sure. A police cap sat in the back window ledge and a blue windbreaker with something similar written in bright yellow hung from the coat hanger over the drivers side rear window. If I ever went past an officer while at speed, I would just flash the lights for a second and keep going. Not a second look.

I know I'm going to catch hell for admitting this stuff, but like I said, I was an idiot and I apologize. I know the risks I took with other peoples lives, and I know I will never do that again.

Don't get the idea that you can do the same and get away with it. I have had extensive professional high speed driving instruction and even then I remember making a lot of mistakes when the adrenalin began pumping. Your equipment has to be the best, as in best tires, brakes, etc.

It isn't worth risking anyone's life for an expensive thrill.
And an amplifying comment about beating the 144mph ticket in court:
The officer claimed that I passed him when he was at 55 MPH on Interstate 465 at Washington Street. He then testified that he accelerated to 125 MPH and I was still pulling away from him. He claimed he also started his Vascar, tracked me, pushed the appropriate buttons, slowed down to get off at the same exit I got off at, and pulled me over. I was at the light for a good 45 seconds before he pulled in behind me.

The problem is, the next exit was Rockville Rd, and it is only 3/4 of a mile from the Washington Street overpass. I provided the court with the Michigan State Police performance testing report on his Crown Victoria Police Interceptor.

The report clearly showed that the police car he was driving was incapable of accelerating from 55 MPH to 125 MPH and slowing down again in time to exit in such a short distance. Not even in an additional 1/2 mile.

He was a liar! I was going 153 MPH

Anyway, he had no idea how fast I was going, and didn't get his facts right before he made up a story in front of the judge. My lawyer ate his lunch.
