Google has identified Charlotte as one of its next round test markets for Google Fiber. Not sure when this will come, but when it does it will certainly be an interesting option. It's not cheap ($70/month), but for the speed it offers, it would be hard not to consider it.

I don't think I would switch to it. The speed is cool but I'd rather not pay $70/mo. I think it's more for nerd cred or niche actual uses.

You might want to reconsider once you get a 4K TV and want to watch "Ultra HD" content from Netflix.

Also, Linux ISO downloads.

4k will be between 12-20Mbps. Your 50Mbps down Cox link should be fine.

But what if I want to stream Ultra HD and download a Linux ISO at the same time?

Seriously though, this is more of a benefit for people in other markets. Cox has been fine for use, but some people live in areas that are (under) served by Comcast or Time Warner. In many areas people are already paying more than we are for service that is much slower.

Also, with increased upload speed, things like cloud backup become more realistic. Imagine how long it would take to upload 2TB over a connection that is only 10Mbps up.

The correct answer is just under 20 days. Moving to gigabit upload speeds would make that an overnight operation.
