C/D: Cruze, Sentra, Elantra, 3, Civic

I just got around to reading this.

http://www.caranddriver.com/comparisons ... rison-test

No Corolla in this test. It probably would have placed above the Sentra.

The 3 wins the dynamics contest, with pretty above average moves, and reportedly uncanny balance for the type of car. The Civic also scored highly, only let down by the CVT, which they said was considered above average.

The Cruze goes with a different formula. Quietest at 70 mph, smoothest, most comfortable. The closest thing here to a midsize sedan, per C/D. Oddly, it has many of the best numbers (only car here in the 15s and under 8 seconds 0-60, best braking tied w/ Elantra) but a fairly laid back personality. The sales pitch is best braking and acceleration with mid-size car comfort, combined with the same 33 mpg as the Civic and the 3, for about the same price. Maybe they are onto something. I mean, they could have gone for sport and been competing with the Civic and 3. They could have gone for appliance and competed with the Sentra and Corolla. But they went for comfort, refinement, and still not giving up acceleration or fuel economy. Almost specs out like a budget Buick Verano. Interesting play.
