It's pronounced "chassy." Brakes, suspension...things that make the car fun or a death trap

Caprice needs brakes

Post by kevm14 »

The front rotors (particularly the front right) have developed some pretty bad warping (probably high spots, not actual warping). I think it started from sitting too much which created rust spots that never went away. So I need front rotors for sure. The wheel bearings are recent (I say that but it's probably been a few years and like zero miles) so I will probably use the races from the new rotors but put the current wheel bearings in, unless they look scored/pitted/failed.

I also know I need rear pads and a servicing of the caliper bracket/slide pins. I may order a replacement bracket and use new slide pins. I think I can get away with reusing my Hawk HPS front pads, except I can't find HPS rear pads. I'd like to run matched front/rear brakes. Summit has a matching set of ceramic Baer Sport DecelaPads, front and rear. $82.50 front and $64.50 rear. Then there's the myriad RockAuto options. I used to get Performance Friction from Autozone but I decided I like the HPS better. Except I can't get rears.

I'm also not sure if I really need rear rotors. And I don't know what rotors to get, front or rear. I've been shopping in the Impala SS category because that gets me rear discs, and the right black coating on the rotor hat so you don't see nasty rusty rotor through the Impala SS wheels.

I guess it depends if I should look at this as "get the brake system back to working order" or something more. I used to order the directional vaned front rotors. There's cryo and slotting. A StopTech cryo treated, black coated, directional vaned front rotor goes for $169/ea, which is too much. Centric has 3 options: regular ($74), high carbon ($95), and high carbon cryo treated ($119).

I actually wouldn't mind slotted as I think it may increase bite at the expense of pad life and dusting. I think I'd rather have the bite. Plus it looks kinda cool.

Overall, these are my candidate suppliers for the various components I need:
- Tirerack
- Summit
- RockAuto
- Napa
- Autozone
- Advance Auto

Good research.

I would replace the bearings.. Dont you want to support Torrington Manufacturing by buying Timken Bearings?

Also, you should do your brakes. People are starting to ask questions.

Napa Ultra Premium front rotors are $119/ea.

I have selected a front rotor: Centric High Carbon 125 Series. $95/ea from Tirerack w/ free shipping. RockAuto has them for $77.89 and it's still under $95 with shipping.

But Centric doesn't make rears. I think I will clean them up. What is a good product for cleaning rotors? Doesn't 3M make something? Roloc 01410 sounds like the right thing. http://3mcollision.com/3m-roloc-brake-r ... -1410.html

Amazon has it for $37.80: http://www.amazon.com/3M-01410-Surface- ... B00063V0XC

I can actually get a rear rotor for the cost of this kit but this will be handy to have in my toolbox.

I will also reuse my front pads. But I need rear pads. And I can't get Hawk HPS. I will also reuse my wheel bearings. They aren't that old.

Rear pads: ACDELCO Part # 17D628M from RockAuto, $23.79/axle.

Front caliper kit w/ metal and rubber bushings with retaining clip: ACDELCO Part # 18K265X, $4.58/axle.

Front caliper pins: ACDELCO Part # 18K219, $5.12/side. I am selecting non-9C1 length because I think I ditched the SEO 9C1 calipers a long time ago (wider to accommodate a special extra thick inner pad).

Front rotor seal: ACDELCO Part # 290257, $5.19/ea.

Rear caliper brackets: A-1 CARDONE Part # 141122, $13.60/ea after core. Goddamnit, only qty 1 available. I will special order the other one from Napa tomorrow, $20/ea after core.

Rear caliper pin boots: CARLSON Part # 16114, $3.63/axle.

Did I miss anything?

I will pick up fluid locally to flush with. Hopefully the bleeders survive. I also have the fancy Cermalube or whatever it's called, for the rear calipers.

Total damage from RockAuto after shipping (from 4 locations) and coupon (-$11.10): $250.58

Plus $20 from Napa for the other bracket. Probably $20 for fluid.

If I drove this car daily still, I would have probably gone with new everything but I don't think that's necessary at this point.

RockAuto checkout fail (HTTP 500). Uhh, try again tomorrow?

I tried again from Chrome. Worked fine.

Caliper brackets...Napa can't get them. Advance isn't open (!). AutoZone can't get them either. Great.

Why do you need brackets?

Once you start having problems with stuck pins they pretty much need to be replaced.

Ah. Does Rock Auto have loaded calipers that come with them?
