Colorado ZR2

Post by kevm14 »

In classic GM fashion, the name is underwhelming. Because this truck has real stuff on it; the old S-10 ZR2 was never like this.

Man this thing is stacking up to be pretty legit. In fact, this is off-road mojo that hasn't even been deployed to their half-tons. And they are probably wise to do this - competing with the well-sold Tacoma is probably a better plan than the comparatively rare Raptor.

On paper this thing has what it takes. All kinds of skidplates. Revised bumpers for really impressive approach angles (look at the front). Locking front and rear differentials. Multi-matic shocks (a la Z/28). Available diesel.
" The 2014 Camaro Z/28 was the first "volume" production fitment of DSSV shocks to a road car, and those shocks placed two DSSVs in the piston of the shock, one to precisely control the rate of piston movement during jounce, the other to control rebound. The result is a car that keeps its tires pressed to a paved track under the most demanding conditions and affords a ride that is better than expected of a track weapon with such firm springs."
" We got a ride in a Colorado ZR2 on an extreme off-road course set up near the 2016 Los Angeles auto show, and found the launches and landings off big jumps and bumps to be almost as Cadillac-smooth as what I once experienced riding with "Ironman" Ivan Stewart in a SCORE Baja racer. We're promised that the on-road ride is smoother and more comfortable than that of the base Colorado, but had no opportunity to verify that."
Looking at the second link's pictures, I need video of this!

More awesomeness. Skid plates you can pound. Width not from wheel offset but from bespoke control arms and rear axle.

This seems like a great show.

First half hour is all about the new Colorado ZR2. They interview the Chief Engineer for GM midsize trucks.

I love any discussion on the shocks. This is basically F1 technology. First seen on the Z/28 and this is the first off road application ever.

His narration of the on road ride reveals the amazing on road ride and handling. Those DSSV shocks might be, gasp, better than MR? Certainly for certain applications they are.
