The short story is diesel-like fuel economy and torque out of a gas engine.
The more complex story is there is still a traditional ignition system at normal compression ratios then later there is a system to inject compressed air into the cylinder while the mixture is already compressed (somehow) to effectively create a higher compression ratio by increasing the internal cylinder pressure.
They claim 10-30% more torque when also supercharging at the same time consuming 20-30% less fuel due to really lean A/F ratios. In theory NOx is also reduced due to more complete, leaner combustion.
Should be available in 2019. I'm interested to see what the implementation looks like. Other manufacturers are working on other variable-compression systems to achieve the same results.
Besides the obvious economy and emissions benefits, there are also performance implications as well. Imagine if (after warming up) your engine was capable of "increasing" its effective compression ratio to 15:1 or 20:1 or similar while running on non-race fuel. New engines with this technology will also have to have stronger internals out of the box which also bodes well to aftermarket modification.

Generally beefing stuff up to handle high cylinder pressures makes reciprocating mass higher which lowers the max RPM. That is if this inherits that diesel trait...
