That engine is essentially the L05 from your Caprice.

This is kind of why I think putting something like this in the Monte makes more sense than the LS swap. Everything would just work (I think...).

I would most likely have to replace the 200R4 to a "built" 200R4, which I recently read can handle 1000HP, and switch to the 8.5 rear, probably beef up the fuel pump.

No fitment issues, no gauge issues, no accessory belt/fitment issues. Can keep AC. Still smells like an old car due to carb stuff...

I don't think this is a terrible option. The LS is not off the table, but this might be a more reasonable first step for someone way over their head.

Also by going this route, I don't have to smash up the drive train tunnel to fit the bigger trans, or notch the frame.

I wouldn't even have to go fuel injection. I may decide to down the road, which may help the transition to a potential LS swap down the road, but this car could be streetable much quicker going the 350 route. This car came with 180HP and like 240 ft-lbs. Going to 365 and 400 or whatever the exact numbers were should feel pretty quick.

To be even more precise I think it is a civilian L05. Unless it is flat tappets then it is a truck L05.

Understand dyno HP before you get too excited. That engine dynoed at 240 but with a HP peak at 4000, the heads and cam I can tell you that it is more like 180 net hp (coincidentally that is exactly what a civilian L05 did). Therefore I'd say that 365 was more like 275 net, which a bone stock LT1 from a 93-95 F-body did. Or, you could walk around any junkyard and any 5.3L from a truck makes that.

That would put a 3,500 lb G-body in the low 14s. I mean that's better than stock...

It's one thing if you could do engine mods in the car and keep the trans. It's another thing to have to pull the engine and trans anyway. And doing all that to still be in the 14s doesn't sound right to me
