General 96 Roadmaster thread
Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
Finally got my E-Zpass. I guess I don't like the idea that it's just out there and sort of a theft target. Who knows how common that is. I don't see it being worth anything and I can just report it stolen. It's a nuisance of course. I'll probably be fine. Bringing it to work tomorrow, finally!!
Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
Moving the shock discussion here...
Under "Original Ride Quality" we have:
But look at this - the B6. I don't recognize these numbers either.
Oh, since I drove it into work, I have more commentary. The rear is quite stiff, both in terms of spring rate and the shock damping. The front, with stock springs and the worn Monroe SS shocks (I guess the front wears out first), feels substantially softer and bouncier. Which annoys me. So that's on the list to correct when I get to it.
Under "Original Ride Quality" we have:
No idea what that is. Would be really interesting if it was an air leveling shock though. Price is high enough for that to be the case I think.BILSTEIN F4BE5E250M0 AK Series
Rear $109.79
But look at this - the B6. I don't recognize these numbers either.
Let me look up Impala SS, Caprice and boxy stuff to see what it lists.Increased Handling/Performance

Rear
$79.79

Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
Listings for a 96 Caprice are the same.kevm14 wrote: Let me look up Impala SS, Caprice and boxy stuff to see what it lists.
Impala SS is slightly different. It still lists this: BILSTEIN F4BE5E250M0 AK Series. But the high performance offerings are different and incomplete.
No rear? Now to check boxy to see if the ones I have on my Caprice are available.BILSTEIN 24011044 {#084575, F4B461104H0} B6 Performance; For Stock Ride Height Info

Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
1990 Caprice, nothing.
1987 lists the lone B6 for the front as the Impala SS and not the other option for $109.
So not too impressed here. Although the complete B6 offerings under the 96 Roadmaster are interesting. I will have to look into those just out of sheer curiosity.

Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
Ah, those B6 shocks listed for the Roadmaster are just the 8X3 RPO shocks for the 9C1. The so-called "soft Bilsteins."
Don't want those...B6 Performance - Shock Absorber (click for more info)

Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
Bilstein's website is also kinda not right in terms of applications. So maybe it's not Rockauto's fault.
The 1104 is still available and carried under the Impala SS (what I have on the front of my Caprice).
However I can't find a car that lists the 0929 which is the rear one for that application. WTF.
Or maybe I'd just buy a cheap front pair of Monroe SS and call it good.

Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
Tirerack carries it under the 96 Impala SS. I don't know if I could even get the front shocks off my Caprice without destroying them. Specifically I'm referring to the top nut. If it's rusted to the shock rod then there's no saving them.
The smart option is probably to get a new pair of Monroe SS since that's what the RMS has now. They are just getting tired. The ones on the back seem fine I guess. That would be $64 plus shipping for both. Not too bad...

Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
If this is potentially going to be a "hot rod" vice a daily driver (since you already have 2 daily drivers without this - Caprice and STS) why would you invest in anything less than hot rod replacement stuff for this car?
Re: General 96 Roadmaster thread
Tuning is already kind of hitting a wall.
Tunercat appears to have sold the rights to his OBD II Tuner to JET Performance, which is dumb. And they don't sell the software. They sell some dumb boxed solution. I want tuning software. I can get everything from Tunercat except the software itself. I e-mailed him (just now, no response yet) to see what my options are. I can buy the OBD2_08 definition file for $80 which does the 96-97 LT1s (F-body, etc.). He even lists updates to existing OBD II Tuner customers. But not new customers. Because licensing stupidity.
Options include:
- LT1 Edit
http://carputing.tripod.com/9697lt1edit.htm
$450 looks like
- Real time LT1 tuning which requires a PCM swap
http://support.moates.net/gm-tunercat-obd2-tuner/
$225 plus whatever the PCM is which I haven't found yet but may be expensive
- EFI Live does not appear to do LT1s but need to positively confirm this.
So this sucks so far. I need tuning capabilities to do anything with this LT1, like put my Caprice's axle in.
