High mileage cars or trucks for sale

Post by kevm14 »

I figured this might be a fun thread. I don't want to put a hard limit on what high mileage means. I think it is usually self-evident. That said, I don't think I could qualify under 300k as high mileage in most cases. If for no other reason that it is not hard at all to find used cars with between 200 and 300k for sale. Witness the Suburban I just posted, where they are asking real money, presumably because it has life left.

I'll start with a local one that popped up in my "Impala SS" search criteria (it's not). My eyes nearly bugged out of my head.

Yes you read that right. And in a particularly interesting twist, it appears near mint. I want it. This would make a great Youtube channel or sub-channel concept. Just go around and buy these kinds of cars, review them, and sell them. Or shit, donate them. Should easily pay for itself if you build the channel successfully.

Alternately, this could also be a daily driver/beater in the spirit of the 98 Riv that Adam bought.

For interest, the Mercedes scores decently. Those W123 cars are pretty damn solid. However, before anyone gets too excited, I am going to go on record and just completely scoff at the non-turbo diesels of that era. Behold the more than depressing specs.

67 hp @ 4000 rpm. Oh, the torque will make up for it, you say? First of all, no, it won't, even if it had 500 lb-ft it would still be a slug. 67 hp is 67 hp, even if it is made at only 1,000 rpm (which would require 352 lb-ft, by the way).

97 lb·ft @ 2400 rpm. 97. My RANGER had substantially more hp and torque than this. Actually about 30 and 30.

The turbos are negotiable but just barely. Because even with the turbo these were still pretty sad at only 125 hp and 181 lb-ft.

I also award no real points to the RWD Cherokee. At least in the snow belt, it is pretty pointless.

The winner, I think, goes to the Impala. It is by far in the best condition, has the most power, gets the best fuel mileage, and probably has the biggest interior of the group.

That just made me realize...a special on the channel would be to buy all three and review them. Oh the possibilities.

Yes, these three would make the perfect YouTube comparo. I can see the Impala winning many of the performance categories, so you would need a diverse series of challenges.

Yeah, or just regular car usage challenges combined with level of interest points. The Impala would score pretty badly on interest but very highly on usability and practicality.

Fun wiki fact on the W123:
From 1982 until the W123's replacement in late 1985, only diesels were sold in North America.
Which means from 1982 to 1985, the only models on this chassis were the 240D or 300D Turbo. Which is probably just as well. The only older Mercedes gas models that would interest me are the high output V8s, zero of which were offered on the W123. But really these are the B-bodies of Mercedes. If that means anything.

Rounding out my Mercedes posts, I realized the W123 is the E-class size. The one I want, of course, is the W116 or W126.

These had plenty of good V8 offerings.

Pinnacle W116 model:

Just kidding, not done yet.
The 6.9 lacked expected luxury touches such as power-adjustable outside mirrors or front seats, although a unique power rear seat, heated seats and even orthopedically designed front seats were options. There was also a new standard feature in 1976: most Mercedes-Benz automobiles that year were equipped with a sophisticated electronic climate control system developed by Chrysler Corporation for use in their top models. The system turned on the heater, air conditioner or both, depending on the thermostat's setting and ambient temperature, automatically maintaining whatever temperature the driver selected. The compressor was an American import as well, supplied by the Harrison division of General Motors.
Interesting they went to Chrysler for the controls and GM for the compressor. The Americans were decades ahead of the Europeans on climate control, it turns out.
