New Tesla Roadster

Post by Bob »

I got a sneak peek at the new Tesla Roadster during my trip to California yesterday. The car is quite stunning in person.

It is kind of ironic that this electric drive car has closer proportions to the current Corvette than the mid-engine Corvette will...

Everyone said electric cars would kill gas cars but, if electric cars can look like this, and perform like this, honestly, I'd rather drive this than the new mid-engine corvette. Not hating specifically on the new Vette. I just for the most part don't like that look. I am not really into the Lambo style.

The Corvette style right now is probably the best looking ever. In my opinion, GM should continue the FR Vette, and call the mid engine something else. Maybe the Chevy Fiero? LOL

It took me a second to figure out what you were talking about but I think you mean that mid-engine look where it looks like the rear wheels and body were stretched rearward to accept the engine. When I see those proportions it just looks exotic so it doesn't bother me. And since it is a Corvette, it isn't going to cost $400k.

What is this Tesla going to cost?

It kind of gives the car a wedge doorstop look with a small hood vice the longer hood and room for style before the windshield. Yes it is an exotic look, but so is Ferrari and Porsche, who for the most part avoid the wedge look.

It kind of looks like the RX-Vision, but maybe better...??? (Or maybe they are just the same color?)

The specs look insane.

However, credit cannot be issued until the product is delivered. So, no one is allowed to say that they have this - it is a future product. I cannot stand the way they announce products and generate excitement instead of actually deliver.

Calm down with the marketing hate. Chevrolet dropped 2 pics a week of the 2016 Camaro dragging it out forever. Other companies try too keep stuff under wraps but drive it in camo like the mid engine whatever GM has been driving around, and we know virtually nothing but rumors for that.

Would you rather have a year of rumors or straight up info?

Also, I have much more confidence in Tesla delivering these as that is what they have done in the past. Low number, fairly exotic, electric drive sport cars. They already have a semi-successful model of doing that. The Model 3 is more of a challenge due to the large scale of production.

The numbers of this car are insane. The price is high enough to not really be much more than a halo car for them though. 200-250K is very steep, granted normal for super car pricing, but those cars don't sell in high quantity either.

GM is not guilty of excessive marketing when compared with timelines and product delivery. Ford is kind of guilty, though.

Here's one major reason Tesla can get away with hype: because there aren't a lot of current volume sales to sacrifice with future speculation. Normal companies don't do this because it would be nothing but negative. People today buying product might stop or slow down, costing sales and revenue. And when the product is delivered, if it is late or different than promised, they are pissed in the future, too. Tesla has nothing to lose and when your stock price is valued all on some esoteric idea of future greatness, all you CAN do is predict wild stuff.

Bold prediction: If they don't figure out mass production OR rebrand the company (i.e. so they are not tying to be a major auto manufacturer) I think this will eventually implode. I think the latter is more probable than the former and much more inline with their Silicon Valley association and valuation.

You may not see a difference but there is a huge difference between some news journalists spotting what might be a mid-engined Corvette prototype in camo and GM making a huge PR announcement (with all of the ceremony and hype of what Tesla is known for).
