General STS thread
Re: General STS thread
Otherwise you are gonna beat yourself up over total unknowns. Remember how the Jersey one looked good in the picture?
Re: General STS thread
Look at this.
Aftermarket Android head unit for the Chinese market SLS. Which obviously is very similar to my STS.

Really didn't expect to see a product like this. Very interesting.

Re: General STS thread
That looks... Really good surprisingly... Way better than factory, even though I am not a huge touch screen in a car guy. This actually looks much better than some Teslas because it looks like it is actually integrated in the dash vice some Teslas where it looks like someone just bolted in a TV sideways... You should get that!
Re: General STS thread
I want that!I bought a set of door "puddle" lights made for a china market "SLS" that shine a Cadillac logo on the ground and they are direct replacement for the North American version STS so I'm hoping they are pretty much the same car.
Not gonna work.Nevermind, I see what you meant now... That must be why the same looking unit is for sale on another site saying it is for the escalade... Damn... A stereo shop couldn't work it out??

no
you can try buying 2007-14 escalade unit that looks almost identical to sts but has completely different software due to can bus.
I guess unit power on, nothing else will work
It does look more modern than what I have but I like my unit for what it is. It's definitely fancier than what's in the CTS-V and SRX.
Re: General STS thread
I was thinking of it for the CTS-V. Got my Caddies crossed...
Re: General STS thread
Still waiting for my pins. I got the A1 Cardone reman brackets which I desperately hope have the proper bore diameter (i.e. were sleeved if they needed it). The clanking and pedal feel is as bad as it ever was. Unfortunately for me, two major pet peeves of mine are suspension clanking and shitty brake pedal feel. Cannot wait to fix this, especially since the same problem is causing both symptoms.kevm14 wrote:I really can't take it anymore. Between the rattle/clank and the lousy pedal feel, I am going to order new brackets and pins for the front.kevm14 wrote:I think the caliper rattle/clank is back. When I was bleeding I noticed the caliper pins were rocking in the bracket (as I was torquing on the bleeder). I guess my lube theory wasn't right. I could try adding lube again - it really would have been a great time to do that when I had the wheels off....argh. The only way to fix this is to get new pins and caliper brackets that are all the right dimensions for each other. I will probably add lube before I just spring for those parts.
Maybe next weekend...
Re: General STS thread
I am now becoming convinced that a significant portion of the latest clunking is actually that driver's side anti-roll bar end link nut having loosened on the stud (again). I am concerned that the hole in the bar itself is no longer the right size and that encourages play, which eventually loosens the nut. I will make a point to roll under the car this weekend and see if I can tighten that. I may try some blue Loctite.
Re: General STS thread
Yeah I was right. I think the major clue was I realized I would get a clunk on the left side even when it was the right side that hit a bump.

My videos are getting better so that's something.
133k.
Oh, it feels SO much better now. That clanking noise was literally killing me a little bit over each bump. I'm not sure how much noise the calipers are even making but the pins are clearly loose as you see on the video. And I think that is still part of the brake feel problem anyway so it will absolutely get done.
I'm just happy I got one major POS thing taken care of before my trip to Maine next weekend. List of POS things remaining:
- Headlight condensation. I don't believe there is water sloshing at least. I need to take it apart again, rinse the inside of the lens with distilled water (again), dry it out thoroughly (again) and tape some desiccant in there that I ordered from Amazon.
- Engine mounts. The vibes at idle are annoying.
- Brake feel. Hopefully the caliper pins and brackets take care of that. If not I'll have to wait until the next pads/rotors job.
That's about it for that list.
Someday I may also decide to fix the driver's side 4-way lumbar system, and I also noticed one of the tab/clips is broken on the seat rear cover, which has to come off to replace the lumbar thing. So that'll happen down the road...or never. A new plastic cover is like $250 and the lumbar assembly is $139 so that job is certainly not a priority. I don't really know how likely it is to get a non-broken seat rear cover or if I'd have to like buy an entire seat and take the working lumbar unit and seat rear panel off of it and use for mine. I feel like the cost would probably be about the same, but rolling the dice on used parts...
The seat feels fine with the lumbar in the position it is in so again, this is hardly a priority.

Re: General STS thread
Lot of video improvements. Words, fast forward for the car ramp stuff, etc.
Couple things for next video:
The camera in the car while driving looks like it is floating in an aquarium in the car. - That needs to be stabilized somehow.
It was a little long and didn't actually show the step by step repair, so if it isn't a "how to fix something" video, and is more of just discussion about your specific forum, it probably won't have wide appeal.
There was extra video that didn't really add value (getting the car on ramps, although I guess I need help with that...)
I think we should still do a channel, but need an angle. I don't really want to just to repair videos on my car. I totally think what you are doing is great for experience shooting a video, talking to it, and all that, just the topics are not really fun/exciting/widely needed. It would be cool if we could do something fun. I think audiences appreciate fun material, not saying we couldn't do some repair stuff.

Re: General STS thread
Yeah I thought that was better. It doesn't make the video more interesting but it does make it more watchable, which has a similar result.bill25 wrote:Lot of video improvements. Words, fast forward for the car ramp stuff, etc.
I should have turned my lens VR on for the driving video. I think that would have helped.Couple things for next video:

Yeah unfortunately it was 3 hours from when I made the first video showing what I thought the job was going to be, to when I showed the cut up bar end. I've been sick lately (still) and I didn't feel like setting up the camera as I was getting frustrated with the job. I realize now that this kind of thing actually could make better video, rather than some textbook shots of the job going perfectly well. People may be interested in how someone gets out of a jam as we've all been there when working on cars.It was a little long and didn't actually show the step by step repair, so if it isn't a "how to fix something" video, and is more of just discussion about your specific forum, it probably won't have wide appeal.
I had the idea to start with the car going on ramps and thought I was going to end with it backing down the ramps, but then I added the driving shot at the end. You have to admit the length is WAY better than the lawn tractor one. All three of them actually. There was extra video that didn't really add value (getting the car on ramps, although I guess I need help with that...)
Unfortunately that is not going to happen. I was already catching shit from the wife from my work on Saturday and that is repairing stuff, not recreational.I think we should still do a channel, but need an angle. Side note, I found a channel of a guy who has an STS and has done various repairs on it. His videos have low 4 figure views. They are better than mine in terms of showing the job and going step by step. So right now I'm just getting used to filming and the workflow of putting it on Youtube. The editing process is kind of fun when I don't have way too much footage (maybe that's why I didn't want to leave the camera running when struggling with the nut)- adding text adds a minor level of amusement. It's just an alternate to a long forum post to be honest. I have no real plans to do anything more than this right now.
