Nice, E-sockets. I have some for some reason. So it didn't need adjustment as we kind of thought. That's good. Now we just need a Tech 2 party.

I'm sure any 5W-30 is fine. Could do a HM synthetic if you wanted though not sure it even needs that. Does anything seem to be leaking?

Conveniently, the only leak I saw was the vc gasket. The timing kit came with a water pump, but the wp can be replaced easily as a separate job. OEM one is not leaking. I had to remove the serpentine belt so I replaced that of course.

I will plan to use the castrol HM 5w30 that I bought for the other saturn. Its a 'Synthetic blend,' which I've heard disdainfully described as 'filtered oil.' Does that mean they filter a bunch of used oil and sell as new? Not that there's anything wrong with that...

I'm going to start commuting in it. Any chance we could tech 2 it during lunch hour? I also think I should find the spare and check it's pressure. It would be hilarious if that was the reason for the tpms light.

I don't believe the spare has TPMS.

I drove this car yesterday (for less than a mile). Here are my quick thoughts:
- A/C worked
- Surprisingly large sunroof
- Seats reminded me of Ed's Viggen but aside from the European narrowness of the car, nothing else did.
- The whole interior is just weird to me and very foreign. There is a single button on the dash for the "central locking" as they would say over the pond.
- Shifter felt fine
- Very German throttle tip-in, meaning it barely does anything until you press it firmly.
- Rear discs for performance
- Engine felt...like a 1.8L
- Probably one of the most surprising things, to me anyway, was that the suspension felt pretty good to me. It wasn't harsh but very well damped with zero excessive body motions. Very European. At 150k. I would assume original everything. The chassis itself also feels reasonably rigid. I can see why these cars were so ubiquitous over there.
- Halfway usable rear seat legroom which is good
- This is a pretty loaded example with leather and heated seats. Manual (German) style seats with the VW-like rotary knob for recline and VW-like pump up/down handle for height.

So not a bad $1500 commuter car at all.

And what we found when attempting to connect the Tech 2 is that it is in fact so foreign that it requires a different memory card module to talk to it. I believe it requires the "Opel" card. Which is hilarious because the Saab requires another, different module. Ed has all the European cars (under GM global).

This T-platform is also considered GM2700 and GM3000, making it seemingly a sibling to GM2900 which underpins Ed's 9-3. I can tell you it feels much more rigid/modern than that platform to me. It is also worth mentioning that the car is under 3,000 lbs.

And it's not even all rusty like my $1500 commuter car was!

It's really growing on me after a week of commuting. AC is good. On the highway, it's surprisingly quiet with the sunroof open.

The oil filters came in today... they're almost as small as the ones for my motorcycle.

It also makes very little power. There's a really nice initial shove then it appears to immediately run out of steam. Oh well, it's comfortable and cheap.

Just read that saab 9-3 rims bolt right up to the astra. That's convenient!

Looks like the sensor comes with the pedal but rockauto doesn't have any for a manual transmission.

It's a "pedal position sensor" and comes with the pedal. Gmpartsdirect carries it for 70 bucks..
