One of my favorite takeaways:
The JGC Trackhawk put down a 3:06.9.

What did the diminutive Camaro turbo 1LE run? 3:05.6. That's right. More than a second faster. I know about the weight difference which is nearly 1,900 lbs. But we are also talking about a 707hp SUV designed to actually have some performance in a track setting vs a car with 275 hp. Trackhawk has 7.5 lb/hp and the turbo 1LE has 12.5 lb/hp. Damn. Track SUVs are stupid.

Also for reference the base prices all include the required performance hardware for the lap time. The as-tested is just non-performance-enhancing options. That said, the turbo 1LE "base" is $32,590. The JGC Trackhawk is $88,590. Just for comparison purposes.

The Challenger Hellcat wide body actually did fairly well for itself, just squeaking into the sub-3s with a 2:59.8. That puts it at #77 out of 242 in historical terms. That actually matches a 2016 ATS-V sedan, which is nothing to scoff at. That said, and for reference, a 2016 CTS-V is still 3 full seconds faster, and is also the slower vehicle in a straight line. But again the Challenger Wide Body is an improvement from the 2016 Charger Hellcat which ran a 3:03.5.

ZR1 was #2 in 2018. Which is also #2 out of 242 historically. Still 1.7 seconds off the winner, the Porsche 911 GT2 RS Weissach. But then the Porsche was a full $199k more expensive than the ZR1. In fact you could buy TWO ZR1s and a Camaro ZL1 1LE for the price of that Porsche. And for the record, the power to weight was identical, slightly in favor of the Porsche (and that does not include German underrating so big props to GM for that one).

The ZR1 managed to just out-gun the 720S by 2 tenths. I am proud of that, too. The 720S has a better power to weight than either of the top 2 cars. And "only" $182k more than the ZR1.

Where was the Ford GT you ask? It got destroyed. Its record last year is just...blown out of the water. It is now ranked #12 with a 2:45.5, a full 6 seconds off the ZR1. The GT costs $495k.

One thing to remember here is that the M/T cars are driven by Pobst. The Lightning Lap is C&D employees. Take that for what you will.

Civic Type R was 0.1 sec faster than the Camaro V6 1LE tested last year. Imagine a world where a 1999 Camaro V6 1LE (had they built it) was about as fast around a track as an Integra Type R. If your head explodes, that is the right answer. The 1LE carries an additional 400 lbs but only 29 extra HP.

The Accord 2.0T beat some vehicles regarded as more ideal for a track environment, including:
2013 BRZ
2006 RX-8
2017 BRZ
2014 Fiesta ST
2016 Mazda Miata Club
2006 Mustang GT
2013 Focus ST
2007 Mini Cooper S
2012 Civic Si
2013 Caprice PPV

So in that respect I guess 217/242 is a better than expected result.

Other fun facts: The Civic Type R did a 3:03.9 as mentioned. A 2010 Camaro SS did 3:09.5.

2018 with historical.

I do not like the way they made one giant image. You used to be able to copy/paste and also click on each car to go to the article. Now I load the 2017 historical times and use that.

Look at the 2017 Corvette Grand Sport (from the 2016 LL). It is ranked as #19 out of 242. I think literally every faster car had more power. Many are lighter. All but one are more expensive (the Camaro ZL1 1LE is the exception).

And here are the facts on price for those two.

2017 Corvette Grand Sport "base price" (includes all performance-enhancing options): $79,930
2018 Camaro ZL1 1LE "base price:" $71,295

They aren't actually that far apart, though in saving $9k you also run 1.4 seconds faster so certainly that is worthy of praise as well, though it took an additional 190 hp to do it. The ZL1 1LE lap time was good enough for the #13 spot.

Bill had asked about the difference between the #2 ZR1 and the #13 Camaro ZL1 1LE. The difference is a pretty significant 6.2 seconds, which is bigger than the gap between the gen 6 Camaro SS 1LE and gen 6 Camaro ZL1 (non-1LE).

For fun, the difference between the gen 6 SS 1LE and V6 1LE is 9.2 seconds. 120 hp apart.

The difference between the gen 6 ZL1 1LE and gen 6 SS 1LE is 9.1 seconds. 195 hp apart.

The difference between the gen 6 V6 1LE and turbo 1LE is only 1.6 seconds, but that's not surprising since they are only like 60 hp apart, and by ratio, it does a lot better than you'd think. 1/2 to 1/3rd the HP difference of the other ones but like only 1/6th the lap time gap. Point is it is an efficient package.
