I read somewhere (Steve Silvia can verify) that the "Turbo" style muffler comes from the Corvair Turbo in the early 60s. They needed to develop a freer flowing muffler that still offered decent sound muffling performance. I believe it refers to the fiberglass packing surrounding a perforated inner pipe (not really a glass pack, which has very minimal fiberglass). It's called Turbo-style from its association with the original Corvair Turbo. Dynomax also makes turbo-style mufflers (others do, as well).
