Dumb.
The transmission will hold gear selections up to the 6200-rpm redline and, unlike a good many so-called manumatics, won’t upshift on its own. But the collision with the rev-limiting fuel cutoff is abrupt, and timing your upshift too close to the redline results in a slow gearchange. That’s not good, because the redline is only 100 rpm above the engine’s horsepower peak.
And by that I mean it is dumb to shift a torque converter automatic, at redline, manually. What in the hell is the point? With electronically controlled transmissions and rev limiters, there's zero reason to think you can somehow time the shift better than the computer.

But I guess they have a point:
Having logged seat time in manual and automatic versions of the CTS- V , we’re inclined to believe the automatic may be the better choice, particularly for the slightly older guys who are most likely to step up to a car in this price range. The manual transmission might be the better choice on a racetrack, but how often is a sedan like this going to show up at track days? And as far as that goes, keep in mind that John Heinricy, GM’s erstwhile performance guru and nine-time SCCA national racing champion, set what GM says is a Nürburgring Nordschleife production-sedan lap record driving a CTS- V automatic.

I like the ability to leave it in a gear and not have it force an upshift (and I am glad this has trickled down to rental Malibus). This is particularly useful when carving up some mountain road where you're right at the top of 2nd by the end of the straight and don't want to upshift to 3rd. I like to be able to just bounce it off the limiter for a split second rather than having to upshift and downshift again and thus upset the car. I do this in the Elise in the mountains from time to time and it works for me.

I agree with all that. I meant for straight line. Their comments were in regard to drag racing basically.

And another one: http://www.ebay.com/itm/Cadillac-CTS-V- ... ars_Trucks

Red seems to be the color of choice today.

That second one has a zero feedback eBay account. Zero.

Also you'll probably want the Recaro seats.

Yeah, maybe the Recaros can make me forget everything bad I have said about GM seats :)

They're supposed to be pretty good, but are also very firm. The thing about GM seats is, I believe they are always the result of their best guess at what most buyers would want. I guess that speaks more to the demographic than GM, because I don't think their "unsupportive" seats are the best seats they can build for racing, or something. They never set out to build a seat that will hold you, even when the car is capable of pulling 1G+. So perhaps trying to appeal to a less enthusiastic buyer is their mistake. Since selling cars is the point, it's hard to call it a mistake. Sucks for enthusiasts buying used models, certainly. But now there are Recaros in the V2 so I would assume that solves it, for anything you'd do on the street and maybe occasional track use.

Those seats look good. I commend GM for at least offering good seats as an option. I understand the demographic they're going after to buy the new CTS-Vs and Corvettes may not always want firm seats with good bolstering.

The bottom cushion bolsters aren't even that aggressive, but it's pretty good for GM. Offering the option was the right thing to do. And they look very adjustable. Extra points for the (manual) thigh extension.
