Including PCMCIA.  And cellular modems (tethering if you will).  And PCI!  Not the first 32-bit bus (MCA was first, then VESA, an extension to ISA) but it certainly became a standard.  In fact, we still have PCI in various forms where the bandwidth requirements just don't dictate even PCI Express x1.  Plug and play also really became en vogue around this time.  Previously adding a sound card (and configuring it to avoid hardware resource conflicts) was a bit of a chore.  Also, these were the days when computer games had to support individual sound card hardware, and you'd even have to tell it what the address was of your card.  Fun.
