2014 E63S: plugs and coils

Post by kevm14 »

Checking in before completion which may be bad luck. Removed driver's side coils and plugs. New plugs are installed and torqued. They indexed about the same as the Mercedes branded plugs did, seemingly beyond the 45 degree spec. But I'm not going to sand down washers. It's not tuned, it'll be fine.

I believe the plugs were done on time at 60k. The coils, however, are original based on the identical 2013 date codes on all of them. That's pretty good for 104k considering the internet says these are failure prone. Maybe it will run better.

It gets progressively tighter as you work back from the front cylinder. But I am using the special 12 point with universal that I bought at FCP Euro and it is proving sufficient, with one of my short 3/8" extensions. Now to install the coils - hopefully they snap on easily. Then, I hope the pass side goes as well.

It does want dielectric grease on the boots so they don't weld themselves to the plugs. Mine pulled out pretty easily (I had to use hose pliers and pry against the fuel rail but nothing broke and the popped free).

Relevant torques: plugs are 17 lb-ft (Bosch box says so, and WIS agrees, though I did 20)
6.5 lb-ft on the coil bolts.

Funny thing about that bad luck. Turns out I did NOT install all driver's side plugs. I missed the third one back (without noticing, and while actively pointing out that FCP Euro had mistakenly shipped me 9 plugs - ugh). I installed the coil but not the plug. Sent me on a while goose chase because I thought that something on the end of the coil wire had gotten sucked into the cylinder. It turns out that (luckily) this did not occur. I will post more on this.

But everything is done and the car is back on the road. The plugs were all indexed about the same. If noon is the correct electrode angle (up at the intake valves and injector), then I would say they were indexed around 10 o'clock. They want +/- 45 degrees and I think this was barely in spec for many of them and I think outside of spec for others (some where more like 60 I think). The new ones went in roughly the same, all between 9 and 10 o'clock. I would have to sand washers to fix it if I cared.

Despite being on all original coils I would say the car runs mostly the same. It might pull a little harder/smoother but it was not a night and day difference. I could have just waited until 120k but I would have been wondering if any performance was left on the table so that wasn't going to happen.
