Bench for garage

Post by kevm14 »

Dug into this (as far as research) with Adam yesterday.

For the bench structure I have it pretty narrowed down.

Materials list:
- 1 x 4x4 beam in 8 ft length (probably treated just for fun). This will be used to support the front of the bench on either side.
- 36 feet of 2x3 or 2x4 (so 5 x 8 footers), if I want to build 12" on center for the bench top (totally overkill) at the full 48" depth (probably not happening). I like the idea of a very stiff and supported bench surface.
- 4x8x3/4" sheet of melamine shelving. Can just rip down to whatever depth I settle on, such as 40" or 36".
- 2x8 as a header/front support. Would need 8 feet.
Thinking I will need a header at the rear, screwed into the foundation. This would allow me to pick the height of the whole thing. The internet says a "tall" work bench is like 36-39". The foundation is around 41" so I would put the top of the back support board 6.25" lower than that (if using 2x4 framing under the bench top). This should achieve a stack up of 2x4, and 3/4" melamine board to arrive at the final 39" working height.
- 3/4" white oak to finish/round the edge. Probably can just leave unfinished because it's a hard wood and won't be in the elements.

- Box of 3" deck screws
- Concrete lags or similar.
- need to check my masonry bit collection
- finally buy a Ryobi hammer drill

I have....some scrap and some screws but will end up having to buy quite a few of these items.
