I was within range of my neighborhood when I saw a low coolant warning pop up in the speedo. I didn't think much of it because I had been driving a little aggressively and just took a corner pretty quickly so I figured maybe it just triggered the sensor. Kept driving a couple miles to my driveway. As I turned into my driveway I looked down and saw that the temp gauge was pegged over 120C. While in my driveway, the A/C compressor shut off. I was able to park the car. I never saw a sudden loss of coolant, a plume of steam, nothing. Fortunately I also never saw a more angry warning commanding me to shut down the engine immediately. I assume the car has some 2nd stage warning for that. So it probably didn't get up to a damage threshold, which is good.
In fact, I parked it, went inside, changed, and came out to drive it on ramps so I could get under it. I now saw coolant everywhere. It started and ran 100% normally and the gauge was no longer pegged.
Needs an upper hose it turns out. It popped off.

07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
The spring retainer rubbed against the metal hose sleeve enough for it to rust. The rust jacked the spring clip enough for the hose to pop out under pressure. Neat.
Shot from the bottom Looks like a 1 minute job from the top.

Is this the spring retaining clip?

No it is not.
I think it is this: A0009931202

Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
Fixed! Old hose was actually rusted where the retainer clip is supposed to grab.
A little WD-40 on the o-rings and it popped right in. Vacuum fill and it was done. Did a quick road test, no issues.
Little more detail on what happened here. The groove that the retaining clip holds rusted away to nothing. This is the upper end of the same hose for reference.

Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
It didn't overheat but I did get a check coolant warning on dash while driving last night. Checked it and yeah it's down a bit from last week when I checked it.
The dealer seems to have spilled a little windshield washer fluid when they topped off the reservoir and that's also blue so that is adding a little confusion to this process.
There does seem to be some splatter on the engine cover so I need to pressurize it and find the source. Ended up buying this because I only have a GM adapter for my Astro pressure tester (air regulator based) that I like.

Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
The splatter
The coolant level. Considering this happened pretty suddenly I think this is not something that I will be able to ignore.
I just need to figure out if it is the radiator, a hose, an O-ring somewhere, or what.
Here are the radiator options if that turns out to be the issue.

Says Nissens is OEM and is $192. Mercedes genuine is $321.
OEM not available at least from the website: https://www.mercedesbenzpartsshop.com/o ... 2215002603
Rockauto: https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/mer ... iator,2172
They have the same Nissens for $161 so that would probably be the pick. That's not bad at all.

Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
Uhhh
Found this banging around the bottom of the radiator and fan shroud pocket.
It is in fact my missing 1-1/16" socket with 3/4" drive adapter. And they required a pry bar to separate. Wtf. No idea what job I even used these on. Dented the radiator fins but I didn't see any obvious leaks in the area. Sheesh.

Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
In other news despite not being available online the dealer says there are 175 radiators in the system. His price was like $322 or something so I still wouldn't do it. But I don't like how certain things aren't available online.
Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
If I end up doing the radiator I should probably replace the other hoses, too.
From memory looking at it yesterday:
- Lower radiator hose that also has a molded T with a rubber extension that mates with a hard line
- Hose from the bottom of the reservoir to the radiator
- Small return hoses that go into the top of the reservoir and go to A) the thermostat housing extension thing and B) the radiator
Also I would need to look into transmission cooler stuff. Both how to disconnect and what the O-ring situation is.

Re: 07 S550: lost coolant and overheated?
Idled it hot and even held RPMs at like 4,000 for 10 seconds a few times. Couldn't make any leak happen. I see what may be traces of old coolant along the bottom of the cooling fan shroud. And if I sniff in the general area of the lower radiator hose connection to the radiator, particularly when the fan is running, I do smell a whiff of coolant. So my best guess is it is an intermittent radiator issue that maybe opens up a bit under the right circumstances but otherwise isn't really doing anything exciting. All the hose interfaces seem fine. It would really suck if that socket bashing around damaged the radiator.
Actually there is some seepage of ATF at the cooler connection but if I do the radiator that will be resolved as long as I figure out how that seal works.
On another note, I think I should replace the crank pulley if I end up doing the radiator. It is wobbling and this is very common. It would be the perfect time with the radiator and cooling fan out of the way.
It also may not hurt to pull the belt off and check the WP bearing for play.
