3/4 Ton Pickup Upgrade

Post by rpaoness »

Several recent trips with my teenagers have shown that we've outgrown the backseat on my extended cab pickup and I now need to find a "real" crew cab.

I'm not sure I'm really shopping yet, but I started with a diesel, 3/4 ton, 2018+ search for Ford, Dodge, GM, and happened across this one that caught my eye. I like the color combo I think, not sure about drivetrain issues in 2019 Duramax/Allison - I never kept up with what years had more issues than others. I think the major vulnerability is the CP4 pump, which I guess can be "fixed" by putting in a CP3 before the CP4 grenades and takes out the rest of the fuel system.

Looks like it's a 445 hp L5P, still the 6 speed Allison which feels pretty well proven.

L5P is going to be your best bet I believe. I thought that was 2019+. EDIT: I guess it's 17+.

Is there no (aftermarket) post pump filtration system that saves the fuel system from such an event?

There is a "fuel system saver" thingy but I don't see one for the L5P. Some CP3 conversion kits require tuning and some don't.

I think post-pump filtration would have to be 25000+psi rated - that would be a super-thick housing if it was more than 1/2" diameter. Maybe there's some new last chance screens?

I would think the worst-scenario of new injectors and pump would be in the $3k range if it did blow.

Looks like the passenger doors and maybe the hood have been resprayed? Less gold than the right front fender and bedside.

If I'm serious I should check out the carfax (sucks that their site doesn't show one) and hire a local diesel shop/Duramax shop to do a pre-purchase inspection.

I got a shipping quote yesterday - $800

Hmmm...

I wouldn't just jump on the cheapest, sketchiest example you can find. The mileage isn't really my concern. But I guess it worked out for your GLA45.

I thought the engine compartment pics on this one were funny.

So rare.

I guess a high mileage 2019 ish would probably be fairly easy miles, and if the vehicle looks clean and well taken care of, that's also a good sign.
