M/T Head 2 Head: Challenger Hellcat vs Camaro ZL1
Re: M/T Head 2 Head: Challenger Hellcat vs Camaro ZL1
Spoiler alert: The Camaro ZL1 is a better GT car, if you want it sports-biased, in terms of being very comfortable yet providing real, accessible total performance. The Hellcat is a better true muscle car that does also have rounded performance which I'm sure is more than enough for the demographic. I suppose this demographic also doesn't care that the Hellcat is 400 lbs heavier than the heaviest Camaro GM makes (except maybe the ZL1 drop top).
So the Camaro ZL1 is a GT/sports car mix while the Hellcat is a GT/muscle car mix. Fair enough. They both offer something. As good as the Hellcat is at rounded performance, the Camaro substitutes some of the acceleration for even more braking and handling (and feel). Too bad there was no Pobst lap time. I guess I can dig up the Streets of Willow track times just for reference.

The comment about the blower noise I think highlights my point well. I don't personally like the whine (I didn't back when the Terminator Mustang Cobras popularized it in an OEM application). It takes effort to cover up the whine (i.e. refinement). I don't know how much refinement is necessary in these kinds of cars but from an engineering standpoint, I know the whine comes standard - you have to work at suppressing it. For whatever that's worth...

The transmission choices on each car also exemplify the differences between them. I think the Hellcat does best with that ZF8HP while the Camaro benefits from the TR6060.
I also have to laugh at the burnout comparison. No doubt, skinny tires and all that power (and weight) with a torque converter trans is THE recipe for good burnouts. There is no better way. Snark aside, the Camaro ZL1 was made to actually put the power down, which is why I say it has more of a sports car mix. Maybe it's also worth mentioning that the ZL1 has been the same since 2012.
All that said, if you want to trap 125mph and you don't want a used C6 Z06 (or a modified something else), then the Hellcat has you covered.
