Snow Removal
Re: Snow Removal
What's wrong with the Tahoe? If it is mechanically sound that is a good price indeed.
Re: Snow Removal
The Tahoe is actually the top option so far. I am probably going to wait until the spring/summer to see if I can get a slightly newer one with the 5.3 since they are so cheap to replace.
How long did they make the 5.7 LS truck engine? With a 5.3 I can get a replacement from up to 2007 instead of having to get a 1998 for whatever that is worth. The Gen 4 5.3 actually goes to present, so there just seem like more options for one with a 5.3.
Unless swapping the 5.7 for the 5.3 is the same, just swapping the computer with the 5.3, then I guess it really doesn't matter except for rust on the older one.
I am also throwing around the idea of getting one that wasn't used for plowing, and getting the plow separate. That will cost more most likely, but I will probably get something much less beaten on.
The 98 for 3K already set up does seem like a great deal. I may regret waiting.

Re: Snow Removal
The engine doesn't matter and you may regret waiting. It's a good price and the bonus is you can use it like right now. You may be able to find a 5.3 Tahoe for like 4 grand but it won't have a plow.
The 5.7 is not an LS engine. It's the Vortec 5700 which is a Gen I 350. It has a conventional distributor. And unconventional fuel injection. It is multiport EFI but it used a weird "spider" with one big injector and 8 individual tubes. It had some issues but the aftermarket was all over it and that problem is considered solved and even if you had to replace it, it's not something that will keep giving you problems. I believe it was a 2 piece intake manifold (so more gasketed surface area) and the injection stuff sits under the upper piece. GM may have referred to it as CPI or central port injection. It's multiport as far as the engine itself is concerned.
If you need to replace it, it looks like this all complete:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinf ... cc=1061356
Brand new, an AC Delco whole unit is $355 from Rock Auto.
Standard Motor Products makes a conversion kit with 8 individual fuel injectors:
http://www.rockauto.com/catalog/moreinf ... cc=1061356
That kit is only $229.
I'm not too worried about this issue. It's not worth paying like $1000 or more for a 5.3L truck just to avoid this. But maybe it is because power is a little better as well as fuel economy.
The Vortec 5700 had very similar output characteristics as the B-body LT1, except without all of the LT1 nonsense (meaning the cam driven water pump and opti-spark distributor). But the heads are a VERY similar design. Not wanting to have something totally normal, they did that funky business with the fuel injection. But I'd consider the L31 Vortec 5700 the more easily maintainable engine between that and the LT1.
Fun fact: The late 90s Vortec V8s used a top mounted throttle body (like TBI or a carb).

Re: Snow Removal
Started looking a little further north where there might be more plows.
I guess this puts CARFAX reports into perspective...

Re: Snow Removal
Yep - No need for a Carfax when you can already see which door was replaced.
Re: Snow Removal
Those NH plow vehicles are going to be beat and rusty. If you're going to register and insure whatever you buy, it may as well be something you would actually want to drive on the road (and more importantly, pass inspection).

Bill here's one.
1997 GMC Xtra Cab 4WD W/Plow - $2750: http://providence.craigslist.org/cto/4851447847.html

I don't know why everything seems to be in Cranston.Runs excellent. New 5.7 crate motor, rebuilt transmission and rebuilt rear end have just under 40K on them. Truck is from Maine so the body has minimal rot on the rockers.
New in the past 2 years:
Radiator
Water pump
Spider injectors
Brakes
All four Michelin tires
Upper/lower ball joints
Inner/Outer tie rods
Windshield
Serpentine belt
Electric plow pump replaced
Hydraulic plow pump rebuilt this year
Needs a little work for inspection but ready to plow
Call show contact info I can't get texts on my phone. I will be home to show the truck on Sunday. Thanks.
Re: Snow Removal
My paranoia is kicking in on this one, a little more than other "cheap" plow trucks for sale with upcoming snow events. Why try to sell this so cheap with all of the snow coming this week? This seems like the time that these should be the most expensive, so why so cheap?
Maybe they have another one already?

Re: Snow Removal
Because it takes longer than a week to sell a vehicle so "jacking up" the price ahead of a snow storm isn't really going to result in significant additional profit.
Re: Snow Removal
I agree but the winter isn't over yet, so why sell unless you thought there was something really wrong?
Maybe they just need the cash more than the plow. I am sure there could be good reasons.
