I guess I don't think much of spending money to save gas. I think much more of spending money to go fast (or something related, like cornering, braking). Or at least spend money for space.
But if I was actually in the market for the kinds of things this car does, I'm pretty sure I'd be looking at a Passat TDI, which I believe has considerably more interior space, is 227 lbs lighter and will save you $15k. Performance is probably in the same neighborhood since it is down 40hp but also 227 lbs and lacks AWD. The BMW is rated 1 mpg better EPA combined, which is admittedly impressive, considering the extra weight, extra power, AWD and it has a torque converter automatic to the VW's dual-clutch. So that's something.
