The air bag light started flashing when I started the Maxima after class this evening. Adding a potentially unrelated variable, it also happened after I cycled the ignition to prime the fuel rails (I tried cranking immediately and it sputtered and died so perhaps there is a fuel pump related problem here?). So maybe I angered the SRS module. Also I blame the cold.
Looking at the FSM now. It gives directions on how to deploy the air bag module when disposing of an air bag. It also says how to do it while installed in the car (if disposing of the whole vehicle).
Nissan provided a way to get the codes, involving blinking the malfunction lamp. Unlike my Caprice, I don't even need to do anything so undignified as shove a paperclip in my data link connector. I simply turn the ignition on, and press the driver's door switch at least 5 times within 7 seconds. It'll then blink out the code(s). There are only 3 codes so....I will try now.
1996 Maxima: air bag light
Re: 1996 Maxima: air bag light
It actually didn't flash a code. It flashed a pattern that translates to history code but no current malfunction. So I need to reset it. I think I have to disconnect the battery without the right scan tool.
