Tesla is regarded as a Silicon Valley/Tech company. Tesla is associated with innovation, and the brand already has a ton of value.
Apple is THE Silicon Valley/Tech company whose brand has been extremely valuable for like 10 years and is also associated (wrongly in many cases but perception is reality) with tech innovation.
So it kind of makes sense.

At the present, it does seem like a small niche market to get into. Plus now that VW will never be allowed to sell diesels in America again they are going to also have to compete in the battery segment, and an Apple fan having to choose between Apple and VW....Minds will explode!
