No more 'Gas Guzzlers' to be sold in RI

Yep, RI is on the list of states that have agreed to ban the sale of gas and diesel powered cars by 2050. Of course, that's 35 years away.. I'm sure any politicians that signed this one were snickering about how they will be long long gone before any impact is felt, or even noticed.

Begin angry rant........... Now.

At first I read this as "vehicles that get bad mileage banned by 2050." But that missed the entire point. Man.

My dilemma over which B-body to get will seem even more ridiculous in 2050 (it seems ridiculous now).

Imagine the scintillating conversation: "I remember a time back in 2015 when I spent months deliberating which then-old gasoline car to buy! I feel old now."

I better collect all the B-bodies now.

Governmental bodies from eight U.S. states and five countries—all members of the zero-emissions vehicle alliance—joined the bandwagon favoring sales of solely electric cars just a few years down the road, as announced at the United Nations Conference on Climate Change
This came out of THAT stupid meeting? Now I actually am mad.

Ha, I was about to say the same thing:
Yeah....remember back in the 70s when WE ARE GOING TO RUN OUT OF OIL!!!!
Most people wouldn't have predicted that we'd voluntarily stop using it, before running out.

Maybe that's not such a bad thing, since planning is better than no planning. But outlaw entirely gasoline and diesel vehicles?

All I can hear is the sound of the cash register ringing. Many people in the industry probably don't want to admit it, but regulation is one of the most important, if not the most important factor driving EV sales.

Areas include California, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Maryland, Massachusetts, New York, Oregon and Vermont
So I am going to have to go to New Hampshire or Maine to gas up! I am going to need a car with 3 gas tanks.

I am surprised Maine didn't get on board with this. They usually fall in line with California on stuff like this. Maybe the state is too rural to accept 100% EVs even in 2050.

I'm pretty sure this only affects new car sales... I suspect we will still be able to purchase fuel and buy/sell used cars well after that.

Though, if they really get the energy density up on batteries, it might be cheaper to go electric by then. The Tesla could handle even my ridiculous commute right now. In 35 years, with economies of scale (even if it was initially aided by regulation), it might actually make financial sense to own an electric car.

Of course, by then I wont be commuting...

Heck, by then, self driving cars might be helping me avoid Olivia taking my keys away....

My "problem" is that I like certain things.

I don't just like going fast. I don't just like torque. I like the internal combustion process. I like turning gas into heat, tire smoke and noise. I like cars for both academic reasons (that EVs can match) and emotional/legacy reasons (that EVs can't match, at least not in 2015).

And I actually enjoy the American car culture. I enjoy needing a car to accomplish my life.

Remember this when you are 70 (69?) in 2050 and are ranting to your grandchildren about the "good old days (tm)" between fits of telling them to get off your lawn.
