The L05 was a strong point here. It had 210hp and 300lb-ft in 89!

Bullet proof 4 wheel drive huh? I guess the 2.8 version didn't get the bullet proof option...

You must be thinking of the S10 version. This is the truck-based K5 Blazer.

On the S10s, most 4WD engagement issues were the vacuum actuator or the vacuum switch. I don't think front differential or transfer case issues were that common.

Never had a 4WD vehicle but I know from talking with others who have that unless you have an ancient manual transfer case, you may have to diagnose and repair things here and there as age/miles rack up. On the S10 this was pretty much guaranteed.

I believe the transfer case is always spinning the front driveshaft and the engagement is actually the hubs.

I think there are even aftermarket systems that change over from the vacuum system to a cable system.

Problems on the (earlier) GMT-400 trucks included some ridiculous wax pellet thing that melts with a heating element, and that drives the actuator (instead of the vacuum servo on the S10s). GM later replaced this with an electric actuator, and retrofits are also possible.

To me it's just one of those things you need to be aware of. All cars have things like this. All that said, the reason not to buy a 2.8 4WD S10 Blazer is because it's not the 4.3L, not because it's 4WD.

Yeah I had the S10 Jimmy. The transfer case blew out within 18 days of owning the truck, and I never even put it in anything except 2WD the whole 18 days... Couldn't do anything except make terrible noises and maybe reverse? I forgot. I know driving it was out of the question until it was repaired. Granted it had miles on it. It was on a second transmission and engine. The second engine went within a year of this disaster. It was a crate motor with maybe 60K. Some cars are just bad luck.
