CTS-V1 options

Post by kevm14 »

No, not for me.

So I went to lunch with Tony (he has the low mile 03 Z06 that he drives.....very occasionally). I happen to have driven my CTS-V for the past 3 days so we took my car.

This was his first time in my car. And he liked it. Enough that he may begin looking around.

So I said, if I were in the market for a V1 again, I'd give serious consideration to a pre-modded version. There are some standard things to do to these that address some of the weaknesses about the platform (such as heavy flywheel and wheel hop).

I hit Search Tempest and the very first result is almost perfect:

I'd say the ONLY thing that needs to be changed, or that he might want to change, is go back to stock ride height. To do that, simply get a set of stock springs (not too hard or expensive) and also remove the rear Nivomat spacer. The rear shocks have a load leveling feature and the shock spacer compensates for the lowered spring to make it do its adjustment thing at the right height.

Amazing bonus: this even has the FG2 shocks. This is kind of like when Adam and I were talking about rust free, affordable southern B-bodies and then Bob found that 96 B4U. I was telling Tony about the flywheel, wanting to do a cam, how rare the FG2 shocks are, and that kind of thing. And then I found this car locally.

I also maybe question the high volume oil pump.

But this thing has been gone through and it has all the right stuff. It will have no wheel hop and probably has a much lighter flywheel. It has a cam and other key airflow mods. This will be at least as fast as his Z06, maybe a touch faster. By that I mean easy mid-12s and maybe low 12s. Probably has 500-525 hp at the flywheel. Maybe 550. Somewhere in the 425-450 rwhp neighborhood. Which is stout, and all natural.

And it is affordable and can probably be snagged for even less than asking. A test drive would reveal whether this thing is beat or a good value.

I think this level of performance is all I'd really want out of my CTS-V. Almost 450 rwhp with excellent manners. No turbo necessary. The LS swap turbo could be reserved for a B-body.

Anyway, this car for like $15k would be a pretty solid deal, provided the car is in good overall condition. It would cost a lot of money and time to take a stock V1 and do all these things to it. And again, these things are almost all desirable V1 things.
