The redesigned 2017 GMC Acadia will hit showrooms in base trim for $29,995, including destination -- around two grand less than the 2016 model. Naturally, you can drive this midsize crossover up Price Mountain -- all the way to a $47,845 peak for the all-wheel-drive Acadia Denali. However, in base spec, you still get an infotainment system with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and about 700 pounds less to haul around versus the outgoing Acadia.

GM is doing well with the new "add lightness" approach which we have seen on a variety of vehicles, such as the Cruze, Volt, Camaro, CTS, ATS, etc. This is a good thing.

The 2.5L base engine seems a bit weak for this class of vehicle even when you consider the weight loss.

Last gen FWD V6 was 4656 lbs. AWD V6 was 4850 lbs (damn).

So I don't know if the 700 lbs is V6 to V6 or V6 to new base 2.5L.

Assuming 700 lbs is the maximum weight loss (why would they take credit for anything less?), then the new 2.5 FWD is 3,956 lbs for 194 hp. Yeah not awesome.

What is the competition exactly? I guess the Ford Explorer is probably the closest competitor. The Explorer's base engine is a 3.5L V6 with 290 HP / 255 lb-ft. There is also an optional ecoboost 2.3L I4 and an Ecoboost V6.

The Honda Pilot, Jeep Grand Cherokee and Nissan Pathfinder are also competitors and they each offer a standard V6.

I guess GM had to get enough content out of it somehow to have a base price that starts with a 2.

The Highlander is the only major competitor I could find that offers a base 4 cylinder. Interestingly enough the Highlander with a 4 cylinder is rated at 20/25 while the Highlander V6 is rated at 19/25.

I guess I was thinking of the Highlander. Or the departed Venza.

It's just getting started. I also thought of the Kia Sorento, which comes with a standard 4 cylinder.

The base Highlander weighs 4134 lbs, so another 200 or so on the new Acadia. It also has a 185 hp base engine. It also has a starting MSRP of $29,9xx or whatever.

I think it's funny that the Highlander really couldn't manage any better mileage with the 4 than with the V6. That's a sign that the 4 is very overworked. I wonder if the same will be true for the Acadia.
