20/20 undercover at Carmax

In Hartford, CT!

This is dumb. Not having a recall fixed is not scandalous considering any buyer can have that recall performed at any brand dealer for free. The customer isn't stuck with anything. The only thing you could say is that the customer did not know of an open recall and then the issue actually happens to them. I guess you could just pass more laws to protect the ignorant...maybe just require any open recalls to be handed over with the paperwork when the car is purchased. Shouldn't be too hard anyway.

What is annoying is the implied conflation between selling a car with open recalls and selling "a lemon." Regular people already think recalls are a problem when they are actually a very good thing. Used cars can be a risk but you know what definitely has a lot of recalls? Brand new cars.

I didn't watch the video, but I would think there are far more scandalous car dealers to visit than CarMax! Maybe they should go undercover to bust the sellers of salvage title junk on craigslist.

Ok, I just watched the video. This is junk journalism at its worst.

You can look up if a car has had recalls completed online with a VIN. Why is it a big deal to check that, then get it fixed for free?

Because they wanted to strike while the iron was hot, so to speak. That's how junk journalism works.

Good journalism, which is what many practitioners of junk journalism think they are doing, is something that actually helps the public by informing or exposing something.

Yes. Sometimes they have recalls before they are even delivered to the dealer. They dealer then performs the recall during or after the PDI (pre-delivery inspection).
