Another fabulous episode. A neighbor had one of these when I was growing up. I didn't think much of it.
But looking at today's current trends, and the market analysis captured in a 1980 SAE whitepaper (my favorite), it is hard to deny that AMC was very early to the crossover scene.
That 4WD system was very advanced for the time. Jeep (owned by AMC then) had a similar system available in at least the XJ in a similar timeframe, but with low range also.

Also, MW was conducting some of these tests on public roads! I am sure they were blocked off but man. And braking tests on patchy snow/ice? Kinda amateur hour.
