It will be weird to have a ZL1 and no Z-28. The Z-28 has way more pedigree/history than the ZL1, plus with the Gen 6 rims being almost a throwback to the Gen 3 and Gen 3 tri-color badging, are they really not going to have a Z-28 or better yet IROC-Z?
The only difference between any point in history and the last 5 years is that an average person could still afford the Z-28/IROC-Z. I know Kevin has a whole article about how the Camaro is only 10% more than 1995, but in 1995, there weren't 75K equivalents, or even 55-60K equivalents (Z-L1). Back then and earlier, the upper models were also pretty affordable except for very few low production models. Lets just say, there was no shortage of Z-28s/IROCs in the 80's. And in the 80's, the RS was the base V8.

Re: First look at 2017 Camaro ZL1
1) I have no real attachment to the Z/28 and I generally don't get hung up on names.
2) It is WAAAY too early to act like GM or any automaker should "bring back 80s excitement." So, no IROC-Z. Not that I care about names...
The entry level V8 Camaro, for 10% more than the average new car, meet or beats ALL numbers from a $70-90k M4, and is actually better to drive.
Who would want to remove all that goodness to save 10%?
The times have changed. The 80s weren't a performance era so it was much easier for a performance anything to stand out. In 2016, you can't just be "kinda fast" and make some rumble. Go buy a 2000 Z28.

That may be, but they are the only one doing it, and I don't think it is going to get them much (I'd be shocked if you actually saw direct references in ad copy). And the new Camaro is a car that looks similar to the old one, has a MUCH improved interior that is still worst in class, and you can't see out of it. I think the Mustang will win sales numbers in this generation. Fortunately, I don't really care about who wins sales as long as I can buy cool used cars. And given the Camaro's faults, I really like what it offers in terms of both capability and the intangibles. For those things, the car is an outrageous bargain.
Re: First look at 2017 Camaro ZL1
I don't really disagree with any of that except that the Mustang doesn't deserve better sales numbers for an inferior product. GM should be rewarded with the sales numbers for such a definitive win of a car.

Well I guess watch subaruwrxfan explain the differences between the Camaro 2.0T and Mustang EcoBoost. He made a compelling case as to why the Mustang probably will appeal to more people, while giving the Camaro full credit for chassis excellence.
