The issue is, the car isn't rated/certified or whatever to actually run fully autonomously so that was pretty stupid on the driver's part.

I think everyone's being an effing baby about this. It's slightly reckless, sure. But it's not like he's trying to land a 747 on the highway. Commuters take risks. Constantly. I see people driving triple digit speeds and/or reading newspapers/cellphones on a daily basis on my shitty commute.

The difference is, this particular risk was in a car everyone likes to criticize.

Cars are designed (legal or not) to drive triple digits. This car was not designed for the driver to be asleep. It is as simple as that.

No, I don't think all cars are designed to safely drive at triple digit speeds just because they can. I can't imagine that that is a requirement that is tested much on all cars. I don't think Corolla or Yaris brakes are made to work optimally at triple digit speeds.

Anyway... I think the point is that drivers drive beyond their ability, and while distracted, which is dangerous.

I guess being asleep is the ultimate distraction.
