HTC EVO 4G LTE doesn't power on

They're not just for making phone calls anymore. But they sometimes need repairing.

HTC EVO 4G LTE doesn't power on

Post by Adam »

The internet thinks this is a common problem. The phone was only in use for a month then "all of a sudden", nothing. Mind you, this was a used eBay phone.

Additional symptoms include no response from various button press/hold combinations as well as no charge indicator while plugged in.

I tried replacing the battery, but no change. I will post some pics later, as access to the battery requires a fair amount of disassembly.

Must be a sprint phone... Cause i think it wants money!

I wish there was a way to easily test its components..

This thread is useless without pics!!

My EVO 4G failed in the same way. I tried many things to revive it, but it was DOA.

What dissasembly is required?

Could it just be the battery? All the smartphones I've come across require the battery even if you have the charger plugged in (series wiring).

It *could* be; but it wasn't in my case. My multimeter showed proper voltage on the battery (whatever that was, its been a while), but the phone was just dead.

We shouldn't forget this is a EVO 4G LTE. It should have been killed with fire a long time ago. Its almost as bad as a Samsung Galaxy S2

You need to unbolt the screen from the metal rear housing so you can remove the housing and get at the battery. I will take some pics later, it was actually pretty easy.

So I did think it might have been the battery and replaced it since it was cheap, but it is just as broken now.

Battery is 3.7VDC according to the print on the battery itself.

At least it doesn't fall out of your hand as easy as the S2...

That sucks. My 4.7" Titan has a removable battery. The industry is definitely trending away from this. And your issue wasn't the battery anyway.

Sigh. Here you go.

Look a phone!

The back of the phone:

Pull of the upper cover. There is a small lip you can grab with your fingernails:

Upper cover removed. If you have an SD card installed, remove it now.
WP_20131026_004.jpg
Now remove the lower rear cover. You may need to use a thin plastic tool to fit in between the cover and the phone body like a guitar pic or a store rewards card. There is some adhesive between the cover and the rear speaker, so be careful when taking this apart.

Rear lower cover removed. You can see the adhesive around the speaker opening at the bottom of the bottom of the picture.

Now remove 5 screw with a T-5 torx driver. Taking the cover off may require using the plastic tool again.
WP_20131026_007.jpg
Remove the volume rocker.
WP_20131026_011.jpg
Now slide the rear metal cover of the rear of the screen assembly.
WP_20131026_009.jpg
Slide the screen down out of the rear metal chassis. This is a tight fit, so some wiggling may be needed.

Parts.
WP_20131026_014.jpg
A small piece of tape holds the antenna cable to the battery.
WP_20131026_018.jpg
Two screws hold the speaker to the screen. One is a T-5 while the other is a Phillips #000 screw .
WP_20131026_016.jpg
A piece of tape covers the battery connector. Peel this off.
WP_20131026_015.jpg
You can then remove the battery. There is adhesive behind it, so be careful when removing it. You don't want to tear any of the ribbon cables back there.

Installation is reverse of removal with the new battery. Hopefully it fixes the problem, it did not for me.
