Put the summer tires back on the Caprice

Post by kevm14 »

The right side ones have some heavy wear on the inside tread (one inside tread is like a slick and the other shows cord in a very small section - they are spent). The left side ones are maybe 3/32".

I guess the plan now is I have to buy new tires within the next month or so and have the tires installed when I bring the car in for inspection. I probably should get an alignment. Perhaps I have a toe-out situation on the front end.

I washed the wheels before installing them and between that and the polished headlights, it makes a difference in curb appeal.

Maybe because I drove only this car all winter on the snow tires, I am able to appreciate the summer tires. It even feels crisper off the line, maybe due to the tread squirm of the winter tires. Turns in nicely, and has steering response mid-corner again.

One thing I will say about these Kumho Ecsta SPT's is that they never really tram-lined their entire life, even almost bald as they are now.

Also, I checked the pressure expecting to have to adjust. Fronts are both at 37 and rears both at 35, exactly how I left it last year. Pretty amazing.

That car looks so good with those wheels too.

Just ordered tires.
4 Hankook Ventus ST RH06
255 /50 R17 101W SL BSW

$25.00 ONLINE ORDER SAVINGS

Total Price: $467.00
Somehow I can't figure out if these are all seasons or summer only. I THINK they are all season, which punctuates the car's fall from greatness.

I also ordered from Discount Tire Direct for the first time. Tire Rack does still offer the Kumho Ecsta SPT, which I was happy with, but they are $150/ea and they only have 2 in stock at the moment. That is the ONLY 255/50-17 tire that they offer, of any type, as well.

So the decision was kind of made for me. Hope I am happy with them.

Their choices:

The Hankook Ventus ST RH06 (an SUV tire btw):

Reviews for Impala SS (6 out of 11 are Impala SS reviews, interestingly)

Seems favorable.

Well today I'll get the exciting information of how well these Hankooks do in the snow on my way home from work. This is the first time I've put the 17s on, and it snowed and I had to drive the car. If I still was running summer tires, my options this morning would have been to either stay home (no laptop, so no telework), or take the Ranger. And I pulled the 4 bags of quickcrete out of the Ranger many weeks ago, so that would have been bad, too. Kind of funny to be in this position after this mild winter.
