Apparently the 82 was awful even by 1982 standards while the 83 was hugely improved. Although the single biggest issue with the 82 was the powertrain, to be precise. The new 2.0L TBI, without any additional HP from the old carbed 1.8L, provided tremendously better performance AND fuel economy. Now I want to see how the 2.8L did, because that was offered in the Cimarron as well. It probably had above average performance for the segment.
In conclusion, at least by early 80s standards, it seems the 82 truly was an embarrassment to Cadillac while the 83 was not.

I'm not saying this was really a luxury car or anything but it doesn't seem bad for a nice Cavalier. And it seems to drive pretty well with the 2.8 (multiport). He really mashes on it and does a couple 2-1s even.
