2007 Honda Civic P2A00

Post by kevm14 »

I don't actually know what year AJ's Civic is, so I'm guessing 07.

Strange code format. But it means O2 sensor performance shortfall bank 1 sensor 1. The car has almost 120k so it is ripe for an O2 sensor (and timing belt, and serpentine belt....air filter? maybe TB/IAC cleanout. AJ already did spark plugs).

Turns out that the job is really easy. After scanning the code, I opened the hood to hopefully show AJ where the O2 sensor is. I started laughing and pointed at the O2 and said "whelp, that's it." Then he laughed. "I can do that!"

As if that wasn't easy enough, the entire cat is stuffed in the vertical section directly after the exhaust manifold, so even sensor 2 is still accessible from the top. But sensor 1 is the one right on top.

Mostly for Adam: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Honda_R_engine#R18

Also to my credit, I guessed the OEM sensor would be NTK, Denso or Bosch. Well, maybe that wasn't so lucky because I'm not sure what else it could possibly be.

RockAuto says Denso is the OE, if we believe that for all R18 Civic engines. This description sounds promising anyway:
DENSO Part # 2349124
Upstream; Gas Engine; DENSO is the OE Manufacturer Air Fuel Ratio Sensor
This is for a 2007, so please confirm the model year.

The price is a reasonable $95. Don't forget about the 5% discount coupon. Code: 1909079016670537 http://forums.kevinallenmoore.com/viewt ... ?f=16&t=87

If you do first class mail, you're looking at $93 or so shipped, after 5% discount coupon.

Autozone gets $132+tax and doesn't stock it (special order only). Napa gets $136+tax and doesn't stock it, either. Advance is the same as Autozone.

Evidently there are at least 3 kinds of O2 sensor wrench. Brian described something that resembles this, that he owns:

I have one of these:

And Ed may have one of these:

If it were my car, I'm sure I'd first attempt to use the socket that I have. I can bring that in and we can see if it will fit over the wires. Ed can bring his in, and Brian can bring his in. One thing I think that is an advantage of mine is you can use a torque wrench with it, while you really can't with the other kinds. I like to torque my O2 sensors. Ok, if you REALLY wanted to get anal, you could calculate a correction factor for the style that Ed has but even for me that's a bit much.

Also, for removal, you may elect to pre-soak in PB Blast before hand (a day or two). The manifold may want to be pretty hot to get it out without a fight.
