RI "cars of particular interest"

Post by kevm14 »

I just found this.

http://www.dmv.ri.gov/documents/other/CPI_List.pdf

These cars are too cool to just pay tax on the sales price. So it's paid on the NADA value. Normally, cars 1984 to 2005 are taxed on the actual sale price. Cars newer than that, and cars older than that, are taxed on the book value. Except for this "interesting cars" list. A state-approved interesting cars list. I wish I was on that committee.

Infiniti and Lexus both get the shaft, but Acura is on here.

Not all brands are called out wholesale. For example, Chevy is paired down to a few "valuable" models. What sucks is, the "Chevrolet Impala" is on the list. Which means someone buying a 2002 Impala gets to pay NADA tax. But they really probably meant Impala SS. What this list really means, though, is the state said sale prices of these cars were far below their book value. I don't really understand that as the book value should track. The book value of an 02 Impala can't be very high...

This is weird.. Some of these are so 'interesting' that I've never even heard of them.. And some (chevy impala, ford mustang) are literally rental cars.

I guess I'd be ambivalent about having a car on this list... "Wow, my car is interesting... Wait, you want to tax me on more than the sale price??"

I am not afflicted with this problem...

The Cadillac entries are kind of sad.

Some of these, I understand though.

Also I was wrong about Acura. Just the NSX. So that makes sense.

But like the Grand National? Sure. 454SS pickup? Syclone/Typhoon? Yup.
