2018 Buick Regal GS

This is interesting.
For 2018, Buick drops the Regal sedan for two new body types: the Regal Sportback hatchback styled to look like a coupe and the Regal TourX wagon. The new Regal is based on the Opel Insignia and will be imported from Rüsselsheim, Germany, with the decision to stop making Regals in Oshawa, Canada.

Like the regular Regal Sportback (that starts at $25,915, which is $2,000 less than the outgoing model), the GS has GM’s new nine-speed automatic transmission and there is no manual transmission offered.

But the GS discards the 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine for a 3.6-liter direct-injection V-6 that generates 310 horsepower and 282 lb-ft of torque. It has cylinder deactivation and start/stop technology.

While others are dropping V-6s in the mid-size car segment, “I felt the GS should have a different powertrain,” said Duncan Aldred, vice president, Global Buick and GMC. “We had the opportunity to do it. I wanted to add more performance, make it more authentic,” he said, which meant the need for more horsepower than the four-cylinder could deliver. “We wanted a halo model and to be a halo you have to do it properly.”
The Sportback is actually pretty nice looking I think.

The V6 in a segment where V6s are less common is also interesting.

Ok, I'll bite. These pictures all have 4 doors.
Buick drops the Regal sedan
???

Also,
The new Regal is based on the Opel Insignia
Fail. Fail Fail Fail for not being Alpha based.
It has cylinder deactivation and start/stop technology.
Who asked for this car to get rid of the 4 cylinder, so it can have a 6 and shut off 2 cylinders? WTF!!!
“We wanted a halo model and to be a halo you have to do it properly.”
So we went with the V6 from a Camaro (which competes with the bottom of the barrel Camaros nobody wants but are just made for MPG requirements)

This car should have been an all black, Alpha based, 2 door, twin turbo V6, 500HP BEAST called the GN. I mean if Buick was serious about a halo car anyway... Sweet Opel with a Camaro V6 and brake calipers that say Brembo... This is sure to transform the brand.

Maybe the plan was to give 75 year olds a car that they could get in and say "ooooohh wow this car is peppy".

Yeah this is not supposed to be a niche performance car. We are still waiting for that.

They did drop the sedan - pictured is the Sportback, which I think looks nice. You can still see the FWD proportions though in the side view.
