Genesis of the WRX, on eBay

Post by kevm14 »

Some lame engine output (115 hp WITH a turbo? I know it was the 80s but come on), but still interesting for the very good 4WD capabilities. And I do mean 4WD. 2 speed transfer case and center locking diff (plus manual ride height adjustment). Just needs an engine. Any other engine.

Only $4,100. Get it while it's...tepid.

That is actually a pretty awesome piece of history. Before you whine about 115 HP with a turbo, take time to remember this is from the era of 170 HP 5.0L V8s. My neighbors had the wagon version of this car growing up. I am pretty sure it was non-turbo.

Even AW said it was slow for its time. A 91 Corolla had, what, 102hp from a 1.6L? 115 with a turbo is lame.

It had low range though! Imagine the 0-10 from an AWD launch in low!

Low range is cool but I bet it had turbo lag.

turbo lag is possibly the only way to make a 115 HP turbo engine feel fast :)

When I was in high school, in Winsted, it seemed like every other car in the parking lot was a subaru wagon of this vintage.

They were so incredibly rusty, even way back then, but the people loved them. I can't imagine there are too many of them around still.

The turbo probably wasn't that fast, but it was an improvement over the NA version (I hope...)
