I believe this is a similar design to the M113. The cover on top of the engine is also an air intake and holds both air filters. It has a rubber gasket that attaches to the MAF which is vertically mounted at the rear of the intake manifold. Also disconnect AIR pump hose tube. It's "weird" but the whole thing can be removed with no tools. There is a single wire spring that holds the cover on the MAF, kind of like a mason jar lid. The only tools required to change the air filters are a torx driver (T-20 maybe?) to separate each air filter housing.
And glad I did. Some signs of mice in there. The air filters were both chewed where air enters and there was "stuff" inside. Not a giant mouse house but some stuff. They were dirty. They were also MB filters.
After cleaning out the air boxes, make sure to press the new filter into the housing. I tried putting it back together just resting it on there and it didn't fit right. The filter gasket actually sits down in the groove.
Anyway this is an easy job.
Oh, that metal heatsink that shows through the engine cover? That's the ECM! Damn. I made a mental note to power wash that area extra good next time.
