07 S550: leaky windshield washer fluid

Post by kevm14 »

It's done this more or less since I bought it, particular when near or below freezing. Right front headlight area will leave a puddle. Finally fixed it. $4.45 plus one O-ring from my assortment and I think I could have gotten away with just the O-ring.

I tried to fix it without draining the reservoir but that was mostly just me getting soaked in the fluid so I extracted it and then did the repair. Should be good to go now. Hopefully the left one doesn't immediately leak.

The leak is back. I'll have to inspect.

I have good news and bad news.

The good news is, my repair with the new adapter fitting and Harbor Freight O-ring seems to be dry.

The bad news is, I think the sprayer unit itself (like the body of it) is actually leaking.

So I guess I'll look it up and hopefully it's affordable and available.

I was able to open the door and peek inside. It's just a plunger operation that hydraulically (using the force of the windshield washer pump) forces the door open. And it also looks like if ice was blocking the door, the nozzle would butt against the door and soak it, eventually melting the ice. It doesn't look like anything would break at all.

For replacement, I saw one screw, accessible from the front. If the engineers were on their game, it looks like I could remove the adapter from the nozzle (where I put the new O-ring), then remove that screw, and just finagle the nozzle out of the front of the bumper while holding the spring loaded door open. I really hope so anyway because if that isn't the plan then it could require removal of the headlight which probably requires bumper removal. This will be a good test.

Right spray nozzle: A2218601447

$55 not in stock

Screw: N000000001527

$1.40

Replacement is exactly what I thought. Should be easy.

Well I replaced it but the hose adapter popped off and I think the plastic retainer broke or flew off. Fortunately I ordered two, and also have the original black one still. But I'll have to get under it again to reattach. As of now it will not hold any washer fluid.

That Harbor Freight O-ring got destroyed also.

Apparently I broke the retaining clip on the hose adapter at some point because the first time I tested the sprayer the hose flew off and it drained the entire gallon out of the tank. Wonderful. Fortunately I have another one (and the original black one I did also save).

Fixed. The retainer must have popped off when I wrestled it off the improper-fitting HF O-ring.

Tested with water, good to go. Filled with fluid and flushed the lines to get the water out.
