2010 Tundra: brake bleed/flush

It's pronounced "chassy." Brakes, suspension...things that make the car fun or a death trap

2010 Tundra: brake bleed/flush

Post by kevm14 »

This was on my more urgent list because the brake pedal has a long travel. Even for a Toyota. He said he did at least the front calipers recently and it looked like pads and rotors all around. So I suspected maybe some improper bleeding.

First, the good news:
I was able to access all bleeders with the truck on the ground. Three of them still had the protective caps. And those three loosened without an issue. It was 10mm in the front and 8mm in the rear.

The bad news:
The front right did not have a protective cap. And it snapped off with very little effort. Curiously, brake fluid didn't seem to be dripping out but I stuck an extractor in there to go through the motions. And I snapped the tip off.

I think he over tightened the bleeder, then maybe JB welded the hole and sort of stuck the bleeder back in??? Something along those lines. Sketchy.

This is a cast iron 4 piston fixed caliper. It is a heavy sucker compared to the aluminum ones I'm used to. To remove it, you just pull the pad retaining pins, which were thankfully not pressed in unlike Brembo designs. The pads slide out. Then remove the two caliper retaining bolts to the knuckle.

The good news:
The upper bolt came right out with the impact.

The bad news:
The lower fought. I did get it out and the threaded portion is on the caliper. But the bolt was no good and it was an M12-1.25, a very fine thread that is not part of a normal tap/die kit. So of to the dealer for a bolt. And O'Reilly for the caliper.

FINALLY got that sorted and was able to execute the bleed/flush with my vacuum extractor.

The good news:
This seems to have been the issue. I only drove the truck in reverse like 10 feet but the pedal feels much better. Glad I prioritized this.

The bad news:
I didn't realize a pad anti rattle clip was missing. I have the new one to go on the right and bought a hardware kit for the left (it is also missing there).

A picture from some other video showing the spring/clip I am missing on both sides:

Caliper retaining bolts are 73 lb-ft due to very fine thread.

Added spring clips. Fitment was not great.
