I am trying to get my hands on the referenced white paper by Dave Cole published by ASME.
I am fascinated by the fact that the small block may have represented GM's first real cross-division collaboration, post-war. It was a novel idea at the time, to take aspects of Cadillac engines, Pontiac, and so on. This guy's dad was the Chief Engineer at Chevrolet and was asked to basically built the small block V8.
Also, his dad appeared to have employed a real systems engineering approach to this engine design (i.e. design by requirements rather than presume architecture and components before even starting). He even describes what sounds like an Engine IPT!
